Byers McCurry Studio
For over 15 years, collaborative artists Ed Byers and Holden McCurry have created imaginative clay sculptures of houses, towers and chapels. Each artwork is hand built and stamped or carved with nature-inspired surface designs or topped with birds or architectural elements.
Just when I thought I knew Ed and Holden’s work – they’ve introduced a new clay series and wonderful mixed media for the wall, combining encaustic, clay, photography, wire, cold wax, and wood panels in a style that is both contemporary and unique.
Meditation sculptures are colorful ‘stones’ made of clay, enhanced with ceramic leaves and flowers, representing a reminder of the balance we all strive for in life.
At Byers and McCurry’s studio you can see their studio works in progress and purchase finished pieces in an artfully designed adjacent gallery. Choose your own sculpture grouping or select individual works to hang as a triptych.
Ed and Holden are Southern Highland Craft Guild members. They exhibit nationally in the American Craft Council shows and in galleries across the country. Both artists are originally from Alabama and are graduates of Auburn University, studied at Penland School of Crafts and painting at the Encaustic Institute in Santa Fe, NM. Their work has been featured in many publications during their career including American Craft Magazine, New Mexico Magazine, Asheville Made and Mountain Express.
Byers and McCurry moved to Asheville in 2007, followed by a relocation to Santa Fe, NM for a few years, and returned to Asheville in the spring of 2017. They are avid travelers and are constantly inspired by hikes in North Carolina and New Mexico, hill towns of Tuscany and Japanese garden design.
Join me on a tour to see Ed Byers and Holden McCurry in their tranquil Beaverdam Valley studio minutes from downtown Asheville. Their hospitality and the wonderful artwork is a joy to experience!
